Our Story
Humble Beginnings
Chessie Marine was founded in 1992 by Bryan and Melissa Buckland — right out of their home — with a focus on inboard ski boats. In the early days, Bryan sold boats at night and on weekends while working full-time in the aerospace industry. Melissa answered the phones and handled all of the paperwork — sales, registration, warranty, and finance — while Dale supported the service side of the operation. Pro shop gear was sold out of the attic and upper garage, and most customer relationships were built face-to-face at boat shows.
The First Breakthrough
In 1996, while still operating out of their home, Chessie Marine added the Correct Craft line of inboard boats. The business steadily grew, and it became clear they had outgrown their residential location when 26 boats were sitting on the property.
Navigating Challenges
In 2000, Chessie Marine purchased its present location, marking a major milestone in the company’s growth. With increased visibility and traffic, combined with an already loyal customer base, the business flourished. In 2022, the facility was fully renovated to continue supporting growth and deliver an even better customer experience.
Embracing Technology
Over the years, Chessie Marine diversified its product line to ensure there is something for everyone’s interests and budget — including pontoons, inboards, runabouts, deck boats, and fishing boats. Today, we proudly carry brands such as Malibu, Axis, Cobalt, Barletta, Sylvan, Starcraft, Flamingo, Carolina Skiff, and Sea Chaser. What began as a small home-based operation has grown alongside our biological family and our work family. Today, Chessie Marine employs more than twelve full-time team members and several part-time employees, many of whom have been with us for over 15 years.
